The Orcas Island Yacht Club was founded in 1956 to further the boating and social interests of boaters interested in sail and power cruising as well as yacht racing. The club's facilities include a 290 foot dock and 1500 square-foot picnic shelter located on its waterfront property in West Sound. In addition, the club leases an adjacent clubhouse to use for some of its functions.
The Club's boating season begins in March and runs through December, while the social season runs year round. Yachting events include summer Friday night Races and the Round the County Race in November. The Club sponsors cruises from March through December. This full calendar offers a variety of activities and camaraderie for all. Of particular interest to cruisers, the Club maintains reciprocal moorage agreements with approximately 100 yacht clubs in the area.
The Club's success is owed to it's members who willingly take active role in putting on Club functions and maintain its facilities. This and a policy of minimal capital expenditures allow OIYC to maintain very low dues to enhance the attractiveness of the Club to the boating community.
We welcome new members who enjoy what we do and who wish to participate actively in the club. We expect all members to take some part in the work of the Club, doing whatever the member's talents and interests dictate. We emphasize this aspect because those who enter into the work of the Club seem to be those who get the most pleasure from their membership.
The OIYC Dock is at the northeast end of West Sound, just west of West Sound Marina, and just east of the County Dock. The OIYC picnic Shelter is across Deer Harbor Road from the OIYC Dock and adjacent to and slightly behind the West Sound Community Hall. The OIYC grounds are just east of the intersection of Deer Harbor and Crow Valley Roads on Orcas Island. See the diagram below. You can get transportation right from the head of the dock via the:

WEB tools for OIYC Members
The OIYC maintains a WEB page at http://oiyc.org for the benefit of club members and guests. You can find there:
- A current schedule of upcoming events,
- Basic information about our club and its facilities,
- The current and past issues of our club’s monthly publication called the OIYCTER,
- Pages dedicated to racing and cruising,
- A message board for discussion and opinion,
- Photo galleries of club event's and of member's photos which they are keen to have you see,
- Blogs by members who like to share stories of their adventures,
- Documents & communications of interest to the OIYC Board of Directors.
PROTECTED CONTENT: Some of the content of the web pages are password protected for the benefit of club members only. If you are not logged in, then this protected content, like the OIYCTER for example, will simply not show up. Each log-in account is associated with a specific email address, has a Display Name, a Log-In name, a password, and a privileges level.
LOGGING-IN: To log-in go to the message board; enter your “Log-In Name” and “Password”. Some of the common problems at this step is that people confuse their “Display Name” with their “Log-In” name, they mistype the data enough times that the board locks them out, or they just forgot their correct information. It helps to keep a written record somewhere.
FAILURE LOGGING_IN: If you fail to log in and you think you do have an account already then a link called I've forgotten my password! Click here! will appear. Click on the “Click Here” and follow the directions. I suggest you enter your email address and not the “account username” (you need only one or the other) and then you need to enter the security code into the box and then click on “Proceed”. If there is an account associated with the email address you entered then an email will be sent to you. Read the email you receive! You have to click on the link it sent you and then you will need to follow the directions again and you will get a second email that will contain a new password. That password will be long and should be cut and pasted in to the log-in password box. You should change your password once you are logged in successfully.
SUCCESS LOGGING-IN: Once you are logged in you can edit/change your personal information, create photo-gallery albums and add photos to those albums, create and edit your own blog, view protected club documents and message forums, and post to the message board.
To access and change your personal information/settings go to the message board and if you are logged-in you will see in the second row of links, on the right half of the screen, a link My_Controls. Click on this link. All of the options you need, and there are a lot of them, are along the left half of the screen and you will need to scroll down to see them all. From here you can:
- Change your Username, Display name, or Password,
- Add an avatar photo which shows on all of your posts,
- Add a gallery album…click on=> ”Your Albums”,
- Add a blog page….click on=> “Your Blog
- Change or edit your profile,
- Edit you signature which shows on the bottom of your posts like Betsy Wareham has,
- Change the personal photo which shows when someone clicks on “see member’s profile” in the message board forums.
- Add files to your personal & private online storage.
PRIVELAGE LEVELS: When an account is created the default privilege level is “Member”. Your privilege level can be increased by the club’s WEB administrator only. Levels include:
- Member…..most privileges but cannot see OIYC protected content.
- OIYC Member….all privileges and can view protected club documents and forums.
- OIYC Bridge and OIYC previous Commodore....can also view protected bridge only documents and forums and edit and create calendar event.
- Root Administrator….all privileges and can edit and delete any users and user content or posts, can add new users directly, can change user’s privilege level, and can change the look and feel of the message board.
POSTING MESSAGES: You need to be logged-in to post. At any time while in the message board system, if you are lost and you want to get back to the first forum page, click on the large green banner at the top that says Orcas Island Yacht Club. Find the forum, topic, and message that you are interested in. You have two choices to post a message. You can “REPLY” from the bottom of a message which will also duplicate the content of the message you are replying to, or you can click on “ADDREPLY” found at the top and bottom of the topic which will contain only what you add to the white box.
After you add your content you must click on the “Add Reply” button at the bottom of the page and you will have to use your scroll bar on the side of the screen to access the button. It is usually off of the screen so people often forget to do this. If you don’t click on “Add Reply” your message will not be added.
At any time you can edit or delete your post so please don’t be worried about making a mistake.
If you need help using the message board please call the WEB Master which for 2009 is Bob Brunius x4646.
Through its close relationship with Sail Orcas, the Orcas Island Yacht Club continues its tradition of supporting youth sailing activities. This OIYC-sponsored program has been a tremendous success over the years. With attendance of over 100 students per summer, it has become one of the largest youth activities on the Island. Summer sessions are offered for children between 7 and 15 years of age, beginning at the end of June and running through the second week of August. All instruction is based on the U.S. Sailing Program for small boats and dinghies and employs U.S. sailing-certified instructors.
Many of the young people who are introduced to sailing via the Jr. Sailing Program go on to race competitively with the Sail Orcas club team of Orcas High School. This program has practice sessions three times a week on West Sound and participates in numerous regattas throughout the season. The team is blessed with great local talent, a fantastic coach, and a spectacular venue.
The 2007 merger of the Junior Sailing Program and the Sail Orcas Foundation combined the resources of the two community Foundations and reduced expenses. The mission to introduce young people to sailing remains the same. As before, the volunteers that make this worthy endeavor possible are dependant upon the continued support and good will of the community and particularly of the Yacht Club and its West Sound facilities. The Yacht Club has been very supportive of the activities of Sail Orcas. We have made available the Club's docks and picnic shelter for the important work they do. Many of our Yacht Club members have contributed time, energy, and resources to help Sail Orcas achieve its remarkable results. There is much work to be done going forward and willing volunteers are greatly appreciated. If you would like to help the cause, please contact Burke Thomas (376-2926).

Club grounds - including the picnic shelter, the land it sets on and the docks, all located in West Sound - are for use by Club members and their guests, reciprocal guests, and other community oriented groups as prearranged with the OIYC.
Restrictions set forth by our Conditional Use Permit from the County require that no outdoor activities take place after 10:00 pm and that there be no rental of our Club facilities. The acting Commodore of the OIYC (or a board member as designated by the Commodore), when determining the appropriate use of Club facilities, should take a balanced view, which includes the needs of the prospective user, the terms of the Conditional Use Permit, and the sensitivities of the neighbors, and the possible wear and tear on the structures.
Applications for use of grounds or picnic shelter must be made to the Commodore and a written contract will be required for a group of more than 25.
- Applicants are expected to leave facilities at least as clean as found, and to remove their garbage. A cleanup deposit may be required.
- Members who fail to comply will be sent clean-up bills, and may be restricted in future use.
- There is parking for Club functions and member's private groups. West Sound Community Hall renters may park by pre-arrangement.
- The YELLOW ZONE on the east side of the OIYC dock may be used by reciprocals when no OIYC members are present. Reciprocals on the yellow zone must yield to any OIYC member.
- Appropriate rafting is expected.
- The entire dock is reserved for OIYC members for Opening Day, the first weekend in May and for the Round-the-County Race participants, the second weekend of November.
- Boats should be identified by an OIYC burgee, a reciprocal club burgee or an OIYC member's name in a portal.
- Each moorage should be limited to two days.
- Bathrooms will provide hot water during the boating season with an honor system collection box for $1 per shower. The bathroom hallway will be under combination lock during the boating season.
