2009 I-5 Cruise
2009 I-5 Cruise
This is traditionally the first "cruise" of the year and also the only cruise that doesn't take place on the water. Also by tradition, the previous year's Fleet Captain Cruise is the I-5 Cruise Pilot. This year was no exception and Len Rickey was the cruise Pilot. Thanks to Bill Carlstrom for his pictures at the Salmon House dinner.
2009 Midi Canal Cruise
Midi Canal Cruise
In early October, 31 people traveled to southern France for a bareboat charter on 8 boats down the Midi Canal. This canal, which was built in the late 1600's and early 1700's, was an engineering marvel. It goes from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean Sea. We started in the center of the country at Castelnaudary and went east until we reached Port-Cassafieres on the Mediterranean Sea. During this trip, we went through 61 locks. About 2/3 of the boats selected a 10 day cruise and the rest selected a 14 day cruise. I have asked each person on the trip (or, "at least," someone from each boat) to add 5 or 6 pictures to this album. - John MacLeod, Midi Canal Cruise Co-Pilot

2012 I - 5 Cruise
The I - 5 Cruise, to the Seattle Boat Show, was a tremendous success! Steve Emmes was the Pilot and Wes Heinmiller graciously volunteered his beautiful boat to transport the OIYC group to and from the Seattle Yacht Club dinner. I didn't take many pictures so, hopefully, some of the other attendees will provide pictures as well.
2013 Round the County ...
These pictures were taken from Patos Island on Day 1 of the Round the County race. Patos was the mid-point of the race and so the Patos Island Race Committee was there.
To see videos of the race taken from Patos, you can go to this web site: https://www.youtube.com/user/OrcasIslandJohn/videos.
The videos are labeled 1 through 5 and are best viewed in this order. (Video no. 5, the last one posted, is at the top of the list and Video no. 1 is actually the 5th video.)

Commodore's Ball
The Commodore's Ball, honoring our new Commodore, Dianne Jordan, was held at the Rosario Resort on Saturday evening, December 10th. The event was a sell out so, if you made your reservation too late, plan on reserving early next year. if you weren't there, check out these pictures to see what you missed. If your picture isn't here, I apologize. There wasn't time to get to every table before the program and then the dancing started.
Cruise Planning Meeting
The 2016 Cruise Planning Meeting was held on January 13, 2016 in the Mansion at Rosario Resort. Our Fleet Captain, Cruise, Ben McLeod, did a great job organizing and MC'ing the meeting. Appetizers were served and the cash bar got a fair amount of use (by designated drivers). If you missed the meeting, look in "The OIYCTER," as well as in this web site, for information on the scheduled cruises. Ben is still looking for some Pilots so, if you would consider volunteering, give Ben a call! The last two pictures were taken by Debbie McLeod.
Men's Work Party C...
This year, the Men's Work Party "Cruise" was to the OIYC Picnic Shelter to work on the Youth Sailing addition to the Picnic Shelter, as well as re-roof and re-paint the Picnic Shelter. I was only able to participate on the first day but, hopefully, someone else will add pictures of the next days' activities. Since this was one of the club's "cruises" for the year, this album was included in the Cruising section even though no one brought their boat (at least on the first day). Next year, it will probably revert to a "water" cruise, instead of a "land" cruise.
OIYC 2012 Annual Meeti...
This dinner meeting was held on February 29th (of course). The dinner was catered by Lynn & Steve Emmes. For $15, members received home made chili and cornbread, a green salad and, for dessert, apple crisp and vanilla ice cream. Everything was homemade and tasted great and the budget was unanimously passed!
OIYC 2015 Commodore...
The Commodore's Ball was held at Rosario Resort on Saturday, Dec 12, 2015. These are compressed pictures because the file size of the original pictures cannot be supported by this web site. In addition, all of these pictures were taken using natural light to preserve the Christmas lights that were a big part of the atmosphere. This further reduces the pictures' resolution.
I hope you were there because the decorations were over the top, the food was delicious and the camaraderie of our fellow OIYC members was the best part of all. If you missed this ball, I recommend that you try to make the 2016 version. You will be glad you did!

OIYC Mid-Sound Cruise
This cruise to Bill Carlstrom's favorite Mid-Sound places (no, really...) was held from August 15th to 25th. Included were La Conner, Coupeville, Langley, Edmonds, Seattle (Bell Harbor), Port Ludlow and Port Townsend (Point Hudson). Only pictures from the first few days are included now but pictures from the rest of the trip will be added over time.
Opening Day
Opening Day
Opening Day will be held on Sunday, May 2nd. We have two themes - Red, White & Blue and Underwater Adventure. You can decorate your boat and crew to reflect either or both themes. It is not too early to start planning decorations for your boat and crew that will tell the world you're glad to live in the USA or/and that you like Underwater Adventures!

Opening Day
Opening Day for OIYC was Sunday, May 3, 2015. We couldn't have had a better day - sunny with warm temperatures. As these pictures will show, it was a lot of fun! Please keep in mind that these are compressed pictures with no exposure modifications, cropping or any other changes that, in many cases, are needed. There are 6 pages of photos. (I'll reduce the number later.) If you want a copy of any of these pictures, please let me know and I will send you an uncompressed version. - John MacLeod
Pub Crawl Cruise to La...
This year's cruise was from Oct 4 through Oct 6. The Cruise Pilot, Bill Carlstrom, was sick and couldn't make it so Dianne Jordan and John MacLeod came off the bench as replacement co-Pilots. Thirty people on 14 OIYC boats attended the cruise. The weather was good and everyone seemed to have a great time!
Rear Commodore's C...
Our 2014 Rear Commodore's Cruise was once again to the Lopez Islander Resort and Marina on Fisherman's Bay, Lopez Island. The cruise was held on March 15th. Because there were small craft warnings, we had many more "car drivers" than "boat pilots" this year. This Rear Commodore's Cruise was different for another reason, also, which is that Dianne Jordan, our Rear Commodore, was not able to make it. Since the main purpose of the Rear Commodore's Cruise is to honor our new Rear Commodore, the "honoring part" will now be part of an upcoming OIYC event. These are all compressed images but, if anyone wants a full resolution version of any of these pictures, please let me know.

Spring Boat Washing Cruise
The first (in the water) OIYC boat cruise was to Roche Harbor, March 27 - 29, 2009. (The first OIYC "cruise" was the I-5 cruise to the Seattle Boat Show.) Spring ("Boat Wash...
As has been the tradition in recent years, this cruise was again to Roche Harbor. The dates were April 15 to 17, 2016, although many people arrived on the 14th. There was a great turn out this year. This is always a popular cruise but it was even MORE popular this year - maybe because of the great cruise Pilots we had this year (Richard & Dianne Jordan, aka "Cupcake").
Spring ("Boat Wash...
48 people and 19 boats attended OIYC’s annual Spring Cruise to Roche Harbor. Most people arrived on Friday (April 20) and left on Sunday (April 22) but some arrived on Thursday and one couple left on Saturday. Most people came by boat and stayed on their boat but some people were guests on other boats and some stayed in the hotel. One nice thing about going to Roche Harbor, there are lots of choices.
Spring Cruise
The Spring "Boat Washing" Cruise is a traditional OIYC cruise. This year, the destination was once again Roche Harbor. Friday night, there was a potluck on the picnic barge and Saturday night, the OIYC cruisers had a BBQ steak dinner in the picnic barge tent. And, the ,now famous, OIYC 2013 Dinghy Championship Race was held.
Victoria Days 2010
VICTORIA DAYS
We were at Victoria Days from May 19 to 23 (Wed - Sun). We attended the BBQ at the horse farm on Thursday and one of us (John) played golf at the Cordova Bay Golf Club with George Larson and Lew Thomas. Both of these were great fun! The Sailpast, as usual, was on Sunday and OIYC won the award for the yacht club with the most boats in attendance! The other traditional events (chart hours, breakfast on the dock, dinners out in Victoria, shared heavy hors d’ oeuvres and wine on the dock and just visiting with old and new friends) were, of course, great. This is the year's "not to be missed" cruise!

Victoria Days' Cruise
The Orcas Island Yacht Club is the only U.S. yacht club that is invited to participate in Victoria Days. The Victoria Days' boats are moored on the Victoria Inner Harbor docks, which are the center of Victoria Days' activities. The boating festivities culminate with Sail Past, the procession of Victoria Days' boats past the reviewing stand, where a member of the Royal Canadian Mounties returns the Skippers' salutes. This year, the Victoria Days' Cruise was May 16 - 20.
Youth Cruise to Jones ...
Each year, Orcas Island Yacht Club boats take young "as risk" children from eastern Washington to an island in the San Juans. For the past few years, the destination has been Jones Island, which was also the case this year. This cruise was held on June 14, 2011. I will add more pictures later when time permits.
Youth Cruise to Jones ...
The Trail Seekers is an all volunteer group from Eastern Washington with the objective of helping children from low economic, disadvantaged homes, develop into responsible adults.
One of the traditional events during the Trail Seekers' annual trip to Orcas Island is a day camp on a remote island. The Trail Seekers have been coming to Orcas Island for over 40 years and OIYC members have been providing their boats to shuttle them to and from one of the islands in the San Juan Islands for ten years.
This year, on June 22nd, there were (approximately) 124 kids, mentors and directors from central Washington that we took to and from Jones Island, which was the site of this year's day camp.
Buses brought the Trail Seekers to and from Deer Harbor and OIYC boats took them to and from Jones Island. I don't believe that there were any OIYC volunteers who didn't thoroughly enjoy the day and the smiles on these small children, most of whom do not have much to smile about most of the time. The children were as young as 5 years old and many of them were around this age, although some were older. This was a new experience for them and a very rewarding one for us.

Youth Shuttle to Jones...
Youth Shuttle to Jones Island
The pictures were taken by a bystander who was visiting the island on their 49' Grand Banks. They were amazed at the number of kids that came out of the three boats, our mission and how well behaved the kids were and that Yachties were doing some good for kids. The vantage point is their flying bridge. No other photographer. They missed Lew's boat.
